Gift of the Waters Pageant
Saturday, August 07, 2010 (ends 08/08/2010)
On April 21, 1896 Chief Washakie, Sub Chief, Inspector McLaughlin and Captain Wilson along with other Shoshone and Arapahoe elders and various civilian and military officials were gathered in a rough storeroom at the Wind River Indian Reservation headquarters at Fort Washakie. On the table before them lays a treaty which sells the United States a tract of the reservation ten miles square. The Indians were to receive sixty thousand dollars worth of cattle and food supplies in the transaction.
Brilliantly colored feathers, lavish beading and jingling bells adorned the pioneers and performers of the first Gift of the Waters Pageant in 1925. The performance featured prominent chiefs of the Shoshone nation.
The Pageant celebrates the blessing of the hot mineral waters after the signing of the treaty between the U.S. Government and the Eastern Shoshone Nation and Arapahoe tribes before the waters were released to the white man. The Pageant play was written in 1925 by Marie Montabe and revived in 1950. It has been presented regularly ever since.
The Pageant is held every August at the Big Spring in Hot Springs State Park. This two day event is a must see for your family. For more information, contact the Thermopolis - Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce at 307-864-3192.
