The town of Thermopolis was founded in 1897 and is located in the southern most point of the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming. Thermopolis is an important recreational and tourism community with such attractions as the Downtown national Historic district, the Hot Springs State park, the Wind River Canyon, and the Boysen Reservoir.
Thermopolis has a population of approximately 3000 people. Thermopolis is the county seat of Hot Springs County, which has a total population of about 4800.
Especially known for the Hot Springs State Park, each year 900,000 tourists visit the area. There are many recreational choices for the local residents as well as for those people traveling to the area. The highlight is the "World`s Largest Mineral Hot Spring" located in the Hot Springs State Park. People can enjoy swimming in a variety of indoor and outdoor hot mineral pools. Many people travel here year after year to take the mineral baths.
Buffalo roam freely in designated areas around the park. Round Top Mountain is a local landmark.
The Wind River Canyon and Boysen State Park are located south of Thermopolis. The reservoir is an excellent recreation area. World class fishing is available at Boysen State Park as well as the Wind and Big Horn River. Hunting of waterfowl, antelope, deer, elk, bear, big horn sheep, moose and upland fowl are also available.
Thermopolis has a wonderful 9-hole golf course as well as tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball courts, soccer fields, rodeo area and fairgrounds.
The Hot Springs County Museum has been reviewed as one of the very best in the area. There are many exquisite exhibits of all types depicting life in the west. The museum is open year around.
The Wyoming dinosaur Center and Dig Sites provides a unique opportunity to discover the prehistoric world, and walk the same ground as ancient dinosaurs. The world class museum is open yearly, and dig site tours as weather permits.
The Old West Wax Museum and Dancing Bear Folk Center opened its doors in August of 1999, with 22,000 square feet of unusual and unexpected entertainment.
Hot Springs County has an excellent school system, hospital, Senior citizen Center, hotels, motels, RV parks, day care facilities, library, nursing homes including the Pioneer Home locate in the State park. The Gottsche Center is a wonderful rehabilitation and therapy facility.
There is no state of local personal income tax, no state or local corporate tax, and no state or local inventory tax.
There are several churches available. Thermopolis has one weekly newspaper, radio station, cable TV and post office. An airport serves Thermopolis with charter flights available.
Thermopolis is known throughout Wyoming as one of the most desirable towns in which to live.
